Hole 7 - Slum of Legs

"Slum of Legs" is inspired by the iconic Tulip chair designed by Eero Saarinen for the Knoll company in 1955. Eero Saarinen was just 15 years old when his father Eliel began designing Cranbrook. The Tulip chair, manufactured by Knoll, is named for its resemblance to the early spring bloom. Saarinen designed each piece in the Tulip series with a single pedestal leg, creating a unified environment of chairs, tables, and stools. Describing his intentions to simplify the structure, he said: "The undercarriage of chairs and tables in a typical interior makes an ugly, confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs. I wanted to make the chair all one thing again."
"Slum of Legs" is sponsored by MillerKnoll.
