Hole 1 - Gateway

The tee is inscribed with Cranbrook founder George Booth’s core belief that “A life without beauty is only half lived.” Beyond the beauty arch, you'll find the Peacock Gate (1927) and Nichols Gate (1932) each designed by Eliel Saarinen as the primary entrances to Cranbrook School and the Art Museum, both still located on Lone Pine Road. The centerpiece of this hole is Cranbrook School’s Quadrangle Fountain, a replica of the Monreale Fountain in Sicily which Henry Scripps Booth, George Booth’s son, visited in 1922. The replica was purchased from the Chiurazzi Foundry and installed on campus in 1927.
