Hole 3 - Bertoia Bronze

"Bertoia Bronze" is inspired by the work of Harry Bertoia, a renowned artist and furniture designer who graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1937 and taught in the Metalsmithing department until 1943. While at Cranbrook, Bertoia produced monotypes that explored the layering of shapes and colors in two dimensions to mimic reverberations and radiating sound waves. He later achieved international success as a sculptor and in 1960 began making artwork that introduced movement, building on his early fascination with sound. These sculptures, collectively referred to as the "Sonambient Series," resemble reeds or other slender organic forms and emit melodic, chiming sounds when they move with the wind or are played like an instrument. Bertoia used different metals to produce rich melodious tones favoring bronze, beryllium copper, nickel, and alloys. "Bertoia Bronze" is sponsored by Gretchen Gonzales and Ethan Davidson.
